Balmaha Lodges:A Review

We stayed at the lodges last week, here is my trip advisor review… please ignore grammatical mistakes etc but I am seething with rage due to how we were treated by the management.

We stayed at the lodges last week and had booked back in July as we wanted a nice place to celebrate our young cousin turning 18.
Upon arrival, we were met by the manager Lillian and another member of staff. They were unable to find our booking at the start but tracked it down a few minutes later. The booking was made with a family members credit card who would be along later, after work.

We were told that the balance needed to be paid and that they would “just take it as long as you could sign it on their behalf”. I did this and when the other member of staff was processing the booking, she had absolutely no idea on the price and almost charged us double until I corrected her.

We were told very sternly that the hot tub required vacating by 10pm and that no glasses were to be taken in which was completely understandable. However, being told this by the manager, I felt that I was in school again and felt she was very condescending bearing in mind that the youngest member of our small party was 11, the oldest in her 50’s and the majority were mother and daughter.

When we got into the lodge, we were impressed by the cleanliness and would have recommended people to stay here.. that was until after we had checked out and the accusations and lies came through with additional charges for supposed damage.

Before I explain what happened and despite us letting one or two things go, I have to say that there were things which couldnt be ignored.. There wasn’t enough cutlery, glasses, plates, the heating made so much noise throughout the night that it kept everyone awake and there was no one to speak with on check out, and there was a broken window handle with no light on the cooker hob which meant when cooking, we had to use the torch from our phone. Some of the dishes were also dirty and there was a lot of dust. On the welcome email on booking, it stated that there was shower gel and shampoo… unfortunately not in the shower!

We still had a lovely night though as a family despite this and we did vacate the hot tub by 9pm. At this time it was noted that the manager was leaving despite saying that she would be on until 10:30pm but if we had an emergency it would need to be a good one as she stayed 30 mins away!

During the night, my 11 year old was unwell and had vomited but it was cleaned, with windows left open over night and when clearing the lodge out. This was going to come back and haunt us apparently…

We had checked out, went home and then came together again on Saturday evening where I received an email saying that they had charged us for cleaning and a broken drawer. We responded with shock as no one broke anything and the vomit was cleaned from the bathroom.

I was told that “The document that was signed by the guest who checked in on your arrival clearly states that any damages occurred during your stay will be deducted from the card”.

No, this was most certainly not the case. I was not told that this was a disclaimer but I that I was signing for check in. I was signing for another persons card… I asked on many occasions for proof of this drawer being broken and was never provided with it. My picture of that drawer is included. We also asked for the bill of repairs as it was stated the £50 for cleaning the odour of vomit and repair to the drawer.

This was another response to a query in relation to signing on behalf of the card owner, “The reason you signed the check in document was that the original person that made the booking was not present yet. We usually take full payment on arrival before guests can check into there lodge and it was the guest that signed the check in document called the guest that made the original booking and told us to go ahead and take payment so we could check
you in.” I did not make any call to the card holder as stated, and this can be proven via mobile phone records.

Another inconsistency is referring to the cost of repairs..”Dear Angeline, The £50 that was deducted from the guests account that booked the lodge does not cover the damage that has been done to the lodge or the extra cleaning that was needed done.” Sorry, what? But you said this: “Due to the damage to the kitchen drawer and also extra cleaning charges for sickness in Lodge 7, we have deducted a further £50.00 charge due to this“, I’m quite confused about this email and her contradiction.

Here is the kitchen drawer in question

Once Lillian decided that I had proof of everything that was lied about, she then decided that she would no longer converse with me. This is pretty poor customer service Lillian. I asked again for proof of damage, the bill and also for info so that we could discuss this with the owner. All of this was ignored. I also note from a previous guest that this isn’t the first time that she has lied, and the proof was recorded via his mobile phone.

A few days later, I called the lodge and I was able to speak with the owners wife who really was lovely. She listened and said that she had heard bits and pieces and that she couldn’t comment until speaking with the manager which I felt was fair, as there are two sides and she hadn’t seen the emails exchanged. She said that she would take my number and have her husband call me that evening. 4 days later, I’m still waiting.

Whilst we understand that running a business is time consuming, I think 4 days is more than adequate to contact a paying customer.

As no one will return calls or emails, we have decided as a family to take things further. We explained that we would do so and made no attempt to add reviews, and gave them the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately we are too kind and we now have no choice but to warn folk against booking in what is lovely accommodation.

As an aside, I noticed damage to the hot tub cover from lodge 7 and saw in a previous review that another guest was charged £150 and accused of causing that damage. It’s still broken… so theypaid for nothing..I was told by the owners wife that they decided not to repair the covers anymore due to the hassle. It also states in other reviews from other guests about the poorly stocked kitchen which they haven’t obviously taken note of and when asking Lillian about this in another email, she stated that the kitchens are fully equipped… There aren’t even any tea towels to dry dishes with!

Anyway, I realise that this is war and peace but I don’t want anyone else being party to such horrible treatment. The money we paid could have had us be elsewhere and hassle free. Thanks for ruining the memories of what should have been a memorable ocassion. It could still be a lovely place if you could employ a manager that doesn’t lie.

Skin Care Review

As part of my self improvement, turning 40 and just really wanting to look after myself a bit more, I thought I would try out a new regime and in turn, teach the eldest about having a bit of a routine for when she starts (should she choose to), wearing make up.

I was lucky enough to be given two products to try out and I have to say that I really liked them a lot and will be using them in the future, especially after seeing the results and costing isn’t high at all compared to a lot of other high street brands.

I’ve been pretty lucky with my skin and apart from the occasional breakout once a month when due my period, water has been my saving grace. That’s it. I don’t buy into the heavy and expensive brands because to be honest, its a load of rubbish and a waste of money. In reality,  we are paying for the advertising costs and a life style that they want us to think we want. I got wise to that a long time ago and as a feminist it isn’t within my belief system.

One thing I do participate in though is a good face mask because I like to soak in the bath with the candles, have some relaxing music on, a book and have some time to myself. It’s one of the few things that I will indulge in because I like how it makes me feel. The coolness of the mask followed by the  softness on my skin thereafter, is a really nice feeling and my face does feel more firm as well. I think it might be something that I’ll be introducing to my clients when doing facial treatments because of how indulgent it is and the one that was sent to me was the Skin Republic Collagen Infusion, Mask which if you purchase in Superdrug, is £4.99

The other product that I was sent, was the really lovely Nouveau Lashes Enhance Mascara. It was so much better than getting fake lashes applied and as its completely natural you don’t look like you have spiders glued to your eyes! Although these come in at a cost of £18.99, it usually costs more than that to have lashes done in your local salon by someone who is very inexperienced and you end up removing them anyway! The great thing about the wand is that there are two sides where one separates for a much more dramatic look and the other side is used to apply the mascara.

These products are perfect for someone like me who doesn’t wear a lot of make up but does like to treat herself now and again, with minimal effort and likes the affordability, and the reliability of the products that I buy.

*disclaimer, these are my own opinions based on personal experience and I was not influenced, nor paid for my review. The only compensation received, were the products.

Comping:#18for2018

I had mentioned in my #18for2018 that I wanted to start comping this year as a hobby for myself and I probably started entering round the end of December, possibly even just the start of January.  Guess what? I WON something today!

What is comping? Well its basically entering as many competitions as you want in order to win the things that you would like to have or do. Well that’s the definition in my mind and for the ones that I entered, it was really just liking or re tweeting on Twitter or filling out simple forms which only took a few minutes of my time when the kids were in bed. It’s really that simple.

I also joined a coupe of sites on Facebook which are fantastic and were recommended by one of THE most high profile competition winners out there and also award winning blogger, Di Coke.  I downloaded her book from amazon for some extra tips on how I could increase my winnings and I was embraced by her community of compers who inspired me to keep on going with entries. Its so amazing to hear of the wonderful gifts that they have all won with many amazing prizes both small and large.

Everyday I wait for the postman or an email to drop through to tel me if I have won any of the various competitions and was delighted to see one appear in my inbox this afternoon. I have won tickets to the NME Award Nominations Party in London, next Wednesday and I can bring someone with me. For a first win, this is pretty darn good although I do need to pay for my accommodation and flights so I’m still deciding if I will be going , not to mention finding someone at short notice to come with me because most folk work 9-5.

So it’s another tick on the #18for2018 list , and I hope to be able to update you all with even more wins this year!

Are you a comper? What have you won this year (and last)?

My Plan Has Arrived

Yaay!!! I was so excited to hear the “ping” of my emails yesterday and the arrival of my BodyCoach Plan… It’s here, it’s here!!!

I couldn’t really get a good look at it when it first came through because I was doing my training for Oncology Massage, in the West End, so I emailed it to my husband and asked him to download and print it out. He actually hole punched it and added it to a folder which made it even easier to look through.

So, I had decided to go for the vegetarian option. I’m not completely veggie but I wanted to keep costs low and get as much nutrients into me as possible and I think that this is a really good way to do it. I will miss chicken most and there’s different types of fish that I wouldn’t normally eat but I knew this before I signed up, so it’s not at all a shock or disappointment. I did have my friend Jo send hers over and some of her meat recipes look great, but I know I made the right decision.

I like that there are a lot of amazing recipes to choose from, and I mean a lot in cycle 1. I was nervous that there wouldn’t be but safe to say that there is no chance that I’ll be lost for ideas. The only thing that I have to say is that there isn’t a lot of snack ideas but as it’s only cycle 1, I’m not going to complain and moan about it!

Now, the whole idea is 3 main meals with two snacks in between and at least 3 litres of water.. on rest days, all meals are low carb and in training days, I have a refuel meal at least 60-90 mins after my HIIT session. This is more than I am used to eating in a day but I think this is also one of the reasons why I have gained weight.

We decided last night that I could have a last take away and a bottle of fizz! Here’s what we had… chicken fried rice, chick balls, chips and egg rolls! Oh, and a bottle of prosecco.

Tonight I will go shopping and pick up the things that I will need for the next 4 days recipes. I’ll do my first HIIT in the morning and I’ll probably head on over to Instagram and YouTube for my very first impressions.

I have done a lot of HIIT in the past with @Gymguymark so it won’t be a shocker for me although I’m really not all that fit at the moment! I’m also used to having 1 hr sessions so 30 mins is going to seem really odd and almost incomplete for me. I do love exercise, but I just got so busy studying and caught up with starting my own business as well as having two young kids, that I lost myself.

I’ll post my “before” pics, and measurements, tomorrow… well maybe not the pics but my weight reading. I hope to achieve a lot in the next 4 weeks… it’s almost 4 weeks to the day that I turn 40!

Yikes!

Have you tried The Body Coach?

Count Down To BodyCoach

I’m planning and plotting… hoping and wishing… that things will be different this time…

What am I talking about? Fitness and weight loss! I know that they will be because I am ready to take on the challenge with the help of my friend Jo over at Mummy’sKnee (who will already be a week ahead by the time I receive my plan). We have discussed and supported one another a lot this week, positivity seeping from our pores and building a camaraderie that even Spider-Man could not penetrate!

In the picture above, you’ll see my “Fit Book”, which my husband bought for me last year and I have yet to use. I plan on using this to plan my weekly meals and chart my exercise that I will do over and above the HIT given by my BodyCoach Plan.

I did a practice run of meal prepping last wk, using some vegan recipes from one of my favourite cook books, made by “The Happy Pear“. I LOVE this cook book and I love how they started their business and healthier lifestyle. I would highly recommend it and watching their YouTube videos because some recipes are so quick and easy, not to mention nutritious!

Here are some of the meals that I made;

They helped me to balance my macros and make sure that I was getting everything that I needed nutrition wise. I didn’t find myself dipping in sugar levels and therefore I no longer needed to have the cup of coffee or chocolate biscuit in the afternoon which has been my norm for longer than I care to admit.

I am also finding that food prep makes me less inclined to crave other foods, like take aways as a treat and I don’t feel the need to say “ach, I’ll just have 1 treat night “. I don’t need to because no take away is going to measure up to homemade “fakeaways”. I don’t have that bloated feeling and I know exactly what’s going into my body, plus saving money at the same time.

So I go to bed now and eagerly await my emails coming through tomorrow… I shall dream of weights, vegetables and all things healthy! Actually, no.. I’m not that bad… yet! I just can’t wait to get the plan through!
